In fact, they have a lot of surprises waiting for you: a very vivid tradition and culture, delicious and original dishes, interesting and very mysterious places to visit and a tumultuous history. This is also the case with Formentera, the smallest Balearic Island.

The 12 miles have so many things waiting for you to discover that you will be amazed and impressed by its potential. Formentera might look like an interruption of the Balearic Islands, but the 5,000 inhabitants continuously try to make sure that it remains a bastion of undisturbed peace and quiet.

About the island:

Formentera is very easily accessible by ferry as it is situated only 18 kilometres away from Ibiza. Cyclists and those who love hiking are in paradise on its very well marked routes that offer them the possibility to admire the breathtaking landscapes.

The swimming lovers adulate the island for its sandy beaches and crystal waters and the art and culture lovers come here attracted by the Ca Na Costa Megalithic Monument.

It is thought that its paving stones are actually a cemetery dating back 4,000 years. Will you find such diversity anywhere else? The Romans, the Moors, the Christians, even the Vandals occupied the island at some time, leaving vestiges of their presence: the Fortified Church in Sant Francesc de Formentera and the objects in the Ethnographic Museum are just some of them.

The main tourist centre is Es Pujols, situated on the Estany Pudent lagoon shores, waiting for you with numerous craft shops in hippie style. On the eastern side of the island you will find the monument dedicated to Jules Verne, the writer who immortalized the beauty of this island in one of his writings.
